Safeguarding is defined as a measure which is used to protect the well-being and the health of a person so that they are free from any abuse or harm. Here the right of the person is protected from different aspects like abuse, neglect from others and many other issues. The current project is based on the case of Angela, a 65-year-old lady who has a learning disability. She has lost her husband and is also facing the issue of poor health. The current project will outline the concept of safeguarding concerning Angela and the factors which put her exposed to risk of abuse. Along with this, the application of the act of law and the approaches to safeguarding will be applied within the current project.
Safeguarding is defined as the protection of children and adults who can easily get affected by any of the changes. For the management of children and adults, proper safeguarding principles must be used and complied with (Braye and Preston-Shoot 2020). This is necessary for the reason that when effective safeguarding principles and practices are used then the child or the adult can be protected well. In the present case, Angela is 65 years old and has lost her husband. Before that, all the finances and practical aspects were managed by him only and was the major carer of her. Currently, she is suffering from poor health issues and is also suffering from diabetes. After her husband’s death, she is finding it more difficult to cope with all her daily activities. Further, as a result of managing the work, she has asked one of the neighbours who has been known to her for more than 20 years to support her. The moving of the neighbour has helped Angela in managing her health condition and to cope with the situation both emotionally and physically. In addition to this, Mary who is Angela’s niece is continuously connected with help over the phone and lives 100 miles away from Scotland. During the conversation over the phone, she noticed major changes in the behaviour of Angela. She analysed that she has become less communicative and asked another neighbour as well and evaluated that she has become dishevelled and unkept as well (Barnett, 2019). Along with this, it was also noticed that their bank account of Angela has been depleting and with this, it can be analysed that she might be abused or impacted by the neighbour living with her. Hence, with this, it is clear that there is a requirement for the application of principles and practices of safeguarding. The reason underlying the fact is that it might be possible that the neighbour living must be misbehaving with Angela and as a result of this there is a change in behaviour of Angela (Chisnell and Kelly, (Eds) 2016). With the evaluation of the case study, it is clear that there are many different types of factors which expose Angela towards the risk of abuse. This is majorly because of the reason that she is old and alone and is not position to do all the activities. Thus, as a result of this, there is a requirement for some help for her and for that, she has taken the help of the neighbour. Now the neighbour is not good and it might be possible that she is suffering because of the abuse caused by the neighbour. With the symptoms seen in the behaviour of Angela, it is clear that she might be facing some abuse or any other issue due to which she has become less communicative. Along with this, the neighbour might be using the money of Angela and as a result, the bank account is decreasing. Thus, with this, it is clear that Angela is facing many different issues and there is a need to apply the principles of safeguarding so that the position of Angela can be improved well.
Safeguarding is a concept which is currently highly in practice as it includes protecting the child and adult from any type of abuse or maltreatment. This is very necessary for the person to manage the situation so that they are not abused or mistreated. In the current case of Angela. She might have been mistreated and as a result of this, her health might be affected to a great extent. Thus, this proper compliance with approaches principles and legislation relating to safeguarding needs to be applied to solving the case of Angela. Safeguarding is a concept which aims at preventing harm and reducing the risk of abuse for adults and children (Firmin and Lloyd, 2023). The adult and child are the most common type of people who face the issue of mistreatment. The reason underlying the fact is that it is difficult to manage the problems of these people on their own and they need some support. Of this, they are at the vulnerability to getting abused and are affected negatively in their work. There are different types of approaches, legislation and principles which need to be followed in taking care of the person suffering from any kind of issue. These approaches and principles improve the position of the person and will help them in keeping them safe. There are different types of legislation which can be complied with effectively to manage the situation in a better and more effective manner (Cooper and White, 2018). For this compliance with Section 42 of the Care Act 2014 is beneficial. This is about the fact that this section outlines the safeguarding enquiries which need to be made. It includes analysing the person who requires care and support and is at risk of abuse and neglect. This includes people having issues with learning disabilities, long-term illness or abuse or any other kind of issue. With the help of this act, a multi-agency local adult safeguarding system must be used to prevent abuse and neglect. The people can make enquiries relating to the vulnerable adult and the risk they are facing. For this, they established a safeguarding board where the local authorities, NHS and police are present to provide safety to the person or the adult. It is very necessary for the people they effectively comply with this board so that proper safeguarding can be provided to the person suffering. In the present case, Angela is suffering from a similar kind of issue where the neighbour is abusing or making misuse of her and her money. Hence, in order to remove this issue Angela must contact some local person for assistance in work. This is necessary as it will include the person in work activities and will help Angela in improving her position. It is crucial because the person will be sent by the local authority so they will be liable for any wrong activity. Meanwhile, the neighbour will be asked to leave the house as a new person is appointed to help Angela by the regulatory bodies listed in Care Act 2014. Thus, in such a case it is the responsibility of Angela or another relative that they must contact this board so that effective help can be provided to Angela. Further compliance with Care Act 2014, is very necessary for providing justice to Angela and to improve her condition. With the help of compliance with this legislation proper treatment can be provided to Angela and her problem can be solved. This is particularly because of the reason that this act protects vulnerable adults who are facing some issues. In addition to this, proper safeguarding will be provided to Angela and it will help her in overcoming the emotional, physical or mental problem which she is facing. Moreover, the neighbour who is mistreating her or abusing her will be punished and as a result of this, the capability of Angela will improve. Along with the legislation it is also very necessary for solving the case of Angela that effective principles and approaches are also used. This is particularly because of the reason that these approaches assist in solving the issue with the person is facing. In the present case of Angela, she is suffering from abuse from her neighbour who is residing along with her (Mantell Concannon and Warburton 2018). The abuse can be analysed with the fact that she has become less communicative and her bank balance is also reducing. Along with this, it was evaluated that these approaches and principles to safeguarding help in implementing the safeguarding procedure effectively. The reason underlying the fact is that these approaches guide the person and solve the case effectively (Spreadbury and Hubbard 2020). These approaches provide the outline of how the person’s situation can be handled and can be exposed to less neglect and abuse. There are 6 different principles of safeguarding with help in improving the situation of the person who is facing neglect or abuse. In the present case of Angela, these principles can be effectively applied to solve her situation. The first and foremost principle relating to safeguarding includes empowerment. This is particularly the Major Principle which states that the person must be supported in encouraged so that they can make informed decisions. In the present case, Angela will be motivated to make her own decision and ask the neighbour to go out. This is particularly necessary because when she is emotionally supported she can decide to better work. For empowerment, Angela will provided the opportunity to make decisions by critically thinking. For this, she will be asked to critically evaluate the situation on her own and then make effective decisions for the betterment of her life. In addition to this another principle which is followed to solve the case of Angela is prevention. This is particularly a principle of safeguarding which emphasizes the fact that it is better to take actions before the harm can occur. This is particularly because of the reason that there are many causes through which harm can take place to Angela. Hence, she must prevent that by taking some action. In the present case if Angela would take the action of removing the neighbour from the house then it will result in the prevention of the harm. This is particularly for the reason that when the person is removed from the house Angela will be in a position to make better and more informed decisions for her life. Along with this another principle which is helpful in the case of Angela is partnership. This is particularly necessary because he can partner with some person who is more reliable than the neighbour. For instance, she can ask her needs to come and spend some time with her so that she can overcome the distress. In addition to this partnering with some counsellor or family Advisors will be beneficial to Angela in overcoming her problem (What are the six principles of safeguarding? 2023). This is particularly because of the reason that when she talks to some expert they will help her in overcoming the issue and it will assist in Angela feeling better. In addition to this another principle helpful to Angela in solving her case is protection. This is particularly necessary because when she is protected then the outcome will be much better. The reason underlying the fact is that when Angela is provided protection she will not ask any person to come and stay with her. Thus, with good and effective protection she will feel safe and secure and will not require any other person for any assistance. Hence, the principle of protection will help and support her in tough times and will also help them have a safe and secure life ahead. For this, Angela will be asked to keep all her belongings in a safe place so that the new person appointed will not know anything. In the earlier case, a neighbour knew all the aspects and as a result of this, the bank account was depleted. Hence, it is our responsibility of Angela that she must keep all things protected and safe. With the evaluation, it is clear that both the act and the principles and approaches of safeguarding will help in preventing abuse from occurring. This is particularly because of the reason that the safeguarding procedure and the act will help Angela in protecting herself. This is due to the reason that the safeguarding procedure is very easy to follow (Sunde, 2022). It includes different steps which are recognise, record, report and referral. Within the first stage, the abuse is recognised and evaluated. The next stage is recording the abuse or the neglect that is taking place. Further next stage includes reporting the issue so that some solutions can be provided. At last, stages of refer where the proper solution is provided and in case it is not solved it is reported to some other people to solve it. Thus, it is very necessary in the case of Angela that the proper safeguarding principles are followed so that fair treatment can be provided to her. In addition to this compliance with the safeguarding procedure will help as an intervention. This is particularly because of the reason that it will assist the person in solving the case and as a result of this Angela will be happy and feel better. When Angela reports the case to the regulatory authority actions will be taken and as a result, proper treatment will be provided to her. Thus, it simply means that complying with effective safeguarding principles and legislation will help Angela in improving her case. With the help of this, she can remove the person from the house and as a result of this, he will be much better. In addition to this, she can hire some other professional people from the companies authorised by the regulatory bodies. This will provide house help and as a result of this, she will feel happy and can easily communicate with others. Along with this, she can recruit a finance shell person who will help her make informed decisions relating to managing all the finances which was earlier done by her husband (Roszkowska, 2021). Further, it can be evaluated that if Angela complies with all the safeguarding principles and legislations then it will help her to improve her position. With the help of this, she can try to overcome all the issues and can be physically and mentally strong. Thus, with the help of this, she can fight any situation effectively and efficiently.
CONCLUSION
In the end, it is concluded that safeguarding is a concept which focuses on protecting the person from any kind of abuse neglect or harm. Many times adult faces some neglect from the family and as such safeguarding is very necessary. The above study highlighted that Angela who is 65 years old is facing such an issue. Her husband died and as a result of this, she was not able to cope with that situation. Hence, she asked a neighbour to stay with her but after that, she was less communicative and many other issues were also faced by her. Thus, with this, it was implied that the neighbour had either abused her or mistreated her. With the evaluation, it was analysed that compliance with the Care Act 2014 helped solve the case. Along with this, it was also inferred that the use and compliance with the principles of safeguarding is also very helpful. Principles such as empowerment partnerships and others help improve the position of team persons suffering from abuse. At last, it is concluded that safeguarding the adult is very necessary to keep them safe and secure.
