This tutorial will show me how to use Adobe Photoshop to create a Visual Hook and then animate the creation process. An image that captures the viewer's attention—often by employing visual tricks, spot colouring, or other arresting techniques—is referred to as a visual hook.

Step 1: Setting Up Document

Open Adobe Photoshop.

Go to File > New... to create a new document.

Set your desired dimensions and resolution. For web, 72 dpi is standard; for print, 300 dpi is preferred.

Click Create.

Step 2: Importing the Image

Go to File > Open... and select the image chosen.

The image will open as a new document. Drag the background layer from this new document into your previously created document.

Step 3: Duplicate the Background Layer

In the Layers panel, right-click on the background layer and select Duplicate Layer.

Name the layer as "Desaturated" or similar.

Locate the layer that is labelled "Background," which is the original image. The Layers panel is usually located on the right side of the Photoshop workspace (Bevilaqua, 2020). the Background layer to bring up a context-sensitive menu. Select "Duplicate Layer" from the options that appear. A dialogue box will ask me for the of the new layer; type "Desaturated" or something similar to help organise the workflow (Tiilikainen, 2019). Click "OK" to confirm. This creates a new layer that is exactly the original, ready for editing and adjustments.

A non-destructive editing method that preserves the original image while enabling adjustments on a different layer is duplicating the background layer (Jaber et al., 2022). With this flexible method, modifications can be performed or undone without compromising the original image data.

Step 4: Desaturate the Image

To confirm that the layer titled "Desaturated" is the active layer, click on it in the Layers panel.

Navigate to the Photoshop interface's top menu bar.

To access the commands pertaining to images, click "Image".

Hover your cursor over "Adjustments" in the resulting drop-down menu to see more possibilities.

Once there, select "Desaturate." With this command, I may quickly eliminate colour and turn the chosen layer into a monochrome image (Chajadi, 2022).

The layer's colours are instantly removed with the "Desaturate" command, leaving just a grayscale version. This operation only eliminates colours while maintaining the tonal values; it has no effect on brightness or contrast (Ieeexplore, 2020).

The picture now only appears in black, white, and various degrees of grey in the document window, providing visual confirmation that the resulting grayscale layer exists.

Desaturating the image is done to provide a neutral foundation on which selective colour can be applied to certain locations (Resemann et al., 2021). By using this technique, the areas that will either receive or keep colour are highlighted and contrast with the monochromatic background. It is an essential stage in developing a visual hook that highlights particular picture components.

Step 5: Spot Coloring

Locate and choose the Brush Tool from the Photoshop toolbox. Either clicking the tool's icon or hitting the shortcut key B will activate it.

To access the Colour Picker, click the Foreground Colour square located at the bottom of the toolbox after choosing the Brush Tool.

Select the colour you want to use as the image's spot colour using the Colour Picker. Think about the colour's effect on the grayscale backdrop and its visual impact (Bajla and Teplan, 2021).

To ensure non-destructive editing techniques, make a new layer just for the purpose of spot colouring. To accomplish this, click the New Layer icon located at the Layers panel's bottom.

Start painting over the grayscale image, highlighting the areas that require attention, while keeping the new layer selected and the Brush Tool active. Only in the areas of the new layer where the brush strokes are placed will the colour appear.

Make more new layers, isolating each colour, if I want to divide an area or use numerous colours. With this method, I can edit with flexibility and specific tweaks without affecting the other coloured regions.

Now that there are areas of brilliant colour in the grayscale image, a "spot colour" effect is produced. These coloured sections should act as a "Visual Hook" by standing out against the image's desaturated portions.

The Layers panel will display many layers above the desaturated one, each representing various spot-coloured regions of the image if different colours or areas are represented by separate layers.

In a desaturated image, spot colouring highlights particular elements, producing a striking contrast. This deliberate use of colour can draw attention to key details, set an atmosphere, or create a narrative within the picture.

Using separate layers for every colour improves control over the editing process by facilitating easy edits without affecting the overall image. It guarantees that the process stays adaptable and reversible, which is essential to expert Photoshop techniques.

Step 6: adding effects

Firstly, it's essential to choose the Lasso Tool or Quick Selection Tool from the toolbox. While the Quick Selection Tool is helpful for selecting areas with constant colour or texture, the Lasso Tool enables freehand selection.

Carefully draw or paint over the portion of the image where the desired effect is to be applied while the selected tool is active. It's critical to be exact because the choice will determine how the effect is implemented.

For a more seamless appearance, it's a good idea to refine the selection's edge once the region has been chosen. In the settings bar of the most recent versions of Photoshop, select Select and Mask; in earlier versions, select Refine Edge (Kelby, 2023).

Navigate to the Filter menu at the top of the Photoshop interface while the region is still chosen. There are many different effects accessible here.

Explore the available filters by navigating through the different sub-menus. When selecting an effect, take the image's characteristics and the intended result into account. For example, Sharpen can bring out the detail in an area, while Blur can soften it to detract from it.

To apply a filter to the chosen area, click on it. Certain filters will trigger a dialogue window containing more settings and sliders for adjusting the effect. Modify these parameters as necessary.

Click OK to confirm the settings when they have been made. The chosen region on the active layer will receive the effect (Kohavi, Tang and Xu, 2020).

Step 7: Animation process

By going to the Window menu and choosing Timeline, my may open the Timeline panel. The panel that usually appears at the bottom of the Photoshop workspace will open as a result.

The ability to create a Frame Animation is available in the Timeline panel. To switch to Frame Animation, click the centre button located at the bottom of the panel if it isn't already set.

Create the first frame of the animation, which will show the image in its initial condition. Make sure that for this first frame, the only layer showing in the Layers panel is the background layer.

Click the New Frame icon in the Timeline panel for each new step to see an illustration of the ones that come after (Thompson, Liu and Stasko, 2021). For every fresh frame:

Until every step of the lesson is represented, keep making new frames and changing the visibility of layers.

When every frame is in position, modify the delay time for every frame to decide how long it stays in place before moving on to the next. To accomplish this, select a time value by clicking the dropdown arrow beneath each frame in the Timeline panel.

Step 9: Exporting Animation

or a GIF, go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)..., choose GIF, set looping options, and save.

For a video, ensure your timeline is set to Video Timeline. Then go to File > Export > Render Video..., choosing H.264, set quality, and render.
