A personal reflection on ethics

According to the Gibbs reflection model, the description of ethics in my view is that ethics refers to norms or rules made to sustain duties, rights, character traits, public good and justice. Ethics are the moral concerns associated with work in my opinion. Talking about ethics in general guides individuals to create a positive impact on the business or work they are doing by making better decisions and actions (Mohamad, et al., 2022). In personal life, ethics plays an important role as it satisfies one’s own needs. Personal ethics are respect for others, loyalty, honesty, fairness and integrity. In accordance with my professional ethics, it satisfies professional needs. Ethics mainly includes worker treatment, confidentiality, worker’s safety and aiding by law. My sources of personal ethics include learning from parents, society culture, religion and experiences.

The ethical theory of virtue ethics is one from which I feel most connected. Virtue ethics deals with the morality and honesty of a person (Higgins-Desbiolles and Monga, 2021). In my opinion, following the practice of good ethics and habits such as generosity and honesty makes an individual more ethical in personal and professional life. Virtue ethics help in resolving issues related to ethical complexity which is very important in my case. The theory resonates with me because I believe in practicing honesty and generosity at home as well as at the office according to the evaluation done as per the Gibb's model. Virtue ethics helps me understand and trust others. It also helps in revising any ethical dilemmas I have related to work, rules and justice.

One situation that has occurred in my life is that when I was working on my college project in a team. During this, I respected others' decisions as well and I had always tried to listen all. However, my team members were not giving me the same respect that I was giving to them. At that moment I did not give up on my personal ethics in fact I acted the same as earlier to them.

Reflection on workplace ethics

According to Gibb’s reflection model, my thoughts and feelings in relation to workplace ethics are associated with building a great team. In my opinion, a good team is made with good leadership, communication and analytical skill. Other than this access to resources such as human and physical are also important in team building (Smith, et al., 2020). I remember the time when I and my team were indulging in a project at the office and dealing with the client on making his website. Our collaboration experience was mainly due to the project as the client was very specific about his operation and wanted the perfect work on the website without any errors or bugs. My team was trying to achieve the best result from the technology and operations we were using to create his website. My role was of the quality analyst in which I had to check the overall quality of the project. My teammates were my office colleagues who shared similar interests. My teammates were developers on the front and back ends, business analysts, risk analysts, web developers and team lead.

The key elements that fostered teamwork effectively in my case are commitment to work, respect for each other, dedication, clear planning, adaptability, and delegation. Trust and clear communication is built when we all practice listening to each other opinions. We tried to be clear at every step of the project so that there was no chance of miscommunication. We managed emotions to build trust in the work.

One of my teammates who were extremely good at designing the website, he worked a lot and put his efforts to make the website appealing and eye-catching. He was familiar with software which required in designing and this helped all of us to enhance our team performance. Other than this he was also familiar with coding languages like Java, HTML and Python. Because of this, he helped the other teammates too including me. His skills not only contributed to the project but also helped the whole team in learning. We all learned from him who helped in effective teamwork and collaboration.

The unexpected challenges that we encountered together were related to unanticipated errors in our work and an imbalance in work allocation. Errors and bugs occurrence in the website design were one challenge which occurred suddenly and the website stopped running when we were all done with the project (Conroy and Ehrensal, 2021). To overcome this challenge we worked day and night because, in the next two days, we had to hand over the work to the client. Imbalance in work occurred because initially, we were not aware of each other strengths and weaknesses. To overcome this challenge we practiced group discussions and brainstorming. 

There are many lessons which I learned from this teamwork. It taught me that communication is the key at every place. Teamwork also teaches active listening and effective speaking, social skills, etc. In my viewpoint, when people work in a team they learn ethics, discover choices and get leaders and trainers throughout their project to support them. The importance of collaboration is essential because it improves the quality of the team. It also leads to creation, innovation and success-building. In this way, collaboration has helped me to reach my goals.

Presenting what managers should do in order to promote and protect the individual rights at workplace

Being the manager of the organization which is responsible for taking care of vulnerable people it is our responsibility to treat our employees with respect because they are working for us. Our work ethic teaches us to remain equal with everyone and then in this scenario, we cannot misbehave with our teammates. We as managers have to practice certain work ethics in order to manage our team and manage dignity. According to the Human Rights Act of 1998, we have to protect the fundamental rights of every individual (Human Rights Act, 2023). Our employees deserve respect from us and if we do not respect them then they will not get respect from others. We as managers have to follow this act and the guidelines of the act. The act will help us in building trust and respect in the eyes of our employees.

As managers to them, we have to understand the negative impact associated with immoral behavior. This will not only impact others but also our organization. When employees feel positive they work hard for the organization in accomplishing the desired goals and objectives. It is important for us to support their interests and value their work. Being a manager, I need to give training to staff on protecting their own rights and support them in taking responsibility to avoid any harassment and discrimination. Further, I also need to train them in the field of human resource management and development.

In order to ensure that our employees are treated with dignity and respect we as their managers have to teach them with Professional Code of Conduct. It explains to the staff how to act on behalf of the organization (Code of Conduct, 2023). It teaches us the values, business, responsibilities and disciplinary steps that are required to work in an organization. Another thing related to the professional code of conduct is that it teaches the staff five working principles to promote and protect their rights. Those principles are objectivity, integrity, confidentiality, professional behavior and professional competence with due care.

Defining how manager, should behave in order to ensure that all staff in the workplace are treated with dignity and respect.

To make sure that the dignity and respect of the workers are protected we as managers have to follow the Employment and Labor Laws. In the UK employment laws protect the rights of not only the managers but employees also (Employment and Labor Laws. 2023). These laws provide legislation on holiday pay, discrimination at the workplace, and dismissal of employees. With these laws, we can protect and safeguard our employees’ interests. We as managers should maintain our employees’ dignity and respect by showing honesty and full transparency towards them. We will have to follow ethics at work with no following of favoritism, bias and prejudice. We have to listen to them it’s not like we are the managers they have to follow our orders instead they can also give suggestions to us. We have to appreciate their work at every point in time and should acknowledge their knowledge. We all have to maintain professionalism in the work otherwise it will lead to certain disputes. Kindness and humbleness are the keys to building work ethics in the workplace with this we can maintain their dignity. Another thing is giving them treats for their good work and appreciating them with gifts and rewards according to the employment and labor laws will help in building equality and respect. 

In order to promote their dignity we have to give them the same respect that they are giving us. Behavior management is one thing which we can follow. With this theory of behavior management, we can judge how things are working in place. Behavior management comes with ethical and positive behavior which helps in the long-term success of our organization (Bulut and Maraba, 2021). With this, we can practice several benefits which will help in the growth of the organization as a whole. Maintaining dignity and honesty is essential to build an environment which serves human rights. Moreover, human rights are the foremost thing which everyone seeks in the office. None of our employees will resist harassment, unethical code of conduct and bullying in the workplace.

As their managers, we can support their hobbies and interests by providing them with additional time so that they can indulge in other activities (Prendeville and Kinsella, 2022). We can practice and embrace their efforts and appreciate their core values. As managers, we can conduct sessions for them in which they can do brainstorming, group discussions and more. With this, they can evaluate themselves as selfless and can work on their weaknesses. We have to practice non-discrimination activities regardless of gender, caste, culture, religion, etc. and should treat them equally. 

In order to support their career development we first have to focus on their professional development so that they can trust us in every matter. Giving them hype in their careers and in their work will be beneficial for both of us. They will get more engaged in the work and they will do their work with honesty (Wang, et al., 2020). Considering their annual and sick leave, we have to give them that much amount of freedom so that they will hesitate to leave us. Giving leaves in emergency cases and understanding their conditions and their priorities will build trust in us. It is our job as managers that we have to make them feel comfortable so that they can directly come to us if they are facing any problem. Making them comfortable will help them in putting forward any issues they have and we can also help them in surviving their problem. Freedom is also considered in maintaining their privacy. Continuously monitoring them and checking their log-in and log-out activities makes them very uncomfortable. We as managers have to mould down our policies and give them a certain freedom. In this manner, we as their managers will protect their employee rights and respect their honesty and dignity.
