The cornerstone of a thriving society in the UK is a healthy family. Yet various problems can destroy the well-being and stability of the families. Nowadays, domestic violence, poverty, and lone parenthood are becoming common in families that affect all the family members, mainly the children. This project helps to know about the difficulties faced by various families in poverty areas. This impacts the poor family suffering from depression or anxiety. Poverty can stop children from attaining a good level of education which could have helped them to leave poverty in adulthood. In 2020/21, 1/5 of the total population was in poverty, showing the biggest fall from 2019/20 in the proportion of children and pensioners. OBR forecasted the employment rate will be below the normal range up to 2028.

Overview of the risks and vulnerabilities of children in the family.

Children who belong from the poverty area living in the United Kingdom, daily face different types of risk and vulnerabilities. These problems have several types of impacts which are long lasting and profound on their emotional, physical and cognitive development. Poverty is one of the biggest problems in the whole world, especially in the wealthiest nations, and remains a significant issue in the UK. This affects a specific portion in the population and makes children more vulnerable. Inadequate nutrition is one of the major reasons for child poverty (Bailey, 2020). Children who belong to families having low income struggle daily to get nutritious food. Many physical problems like stunting in growth of the children, cognitive deficits may occur due to poor nutrition. Malnutrition can also affect a child’s academic performance as it decreases the ability to concentrate. There are several families whose income is low but they stay in overcrowded housing which are substandard. This affects the health of the children and as well as their overall well-being. 

For the children in impoverished families can’t easily access healthcare facilities. This occurs due to not having the required financial condition to treat their children, which later on lead to long term health problems. Also many of them suffer from chronic absenteeism which occurs due to instability of housing and severe illness. Psychological stress between the children can also be seen hindering educational attainment. Apart from financial and educational problems, psychological issues are also common between the children living in poverty (Bradshaw, 2023). The uncertainty and stress about the financial hardships often lead to mental illness among them. Due to these problems they often suffer from severe anxiety, decreased self-esteem and depression.

Moreover, the stigma related to poverty is the reason for social isolation and different feelings due to shame. This mainly affects the child’s social relationships and image of their own self. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are the reason for the increased level of poverty between children. It includes domestic violence, negligence or abuse mainly substance abuse. These effects leave a long term consequence on children’s mental health which leads to trauma. If it's left untreated or unaddressed then it can increase the level of poverty throughout the generation (Edmiston, 2022). Children in the UK or United Kingdom who live in poverty face a variety of vulnerabilities and risk factors. Addressing the poverty of the children in low income families requires approaches including different policies related to giving facilities to those families.

Around 14.4 million people are under the poverty line in 2021/22 of which 4.2 million are children. Poverty can happen due to many reasons including low pay, inadequate social security, and social injustice. Major cause of poverty is the lowest paid 20 percent. Despite low wages, childcare is very costly with zero progress in better work with good wages. 

Lack of job

Unemployment is the main cause of poverty. Though work can be considered as a path to escape poverty, low income gives limited income. Due to this one has little time to take care of progression, exacerbating poverty rather than helping to escape poverty. No improvement has been seen in the past decade despite including new deals and government schemes. Jobless households had four times more restricted consumption than the paid household. The core problem is lack of affordability and lack of availability. Isolation and lack of support are also side problems. Practical and emotional support in the time of need can help one to come out from the problem one is facing (Featherstone et al. 2019). But many people are cutting ties with their family members or have a pseudo relationship that is contacting them once or twice in years. Helps from other family members can help one to overcome intense poverty.

Social injustice or social exclusion

Social injustice or exclusion is also a reason behind the property. The exclusion can be 4 types: impoverishment, labor market exclusion, service exclusion, exclusion from social relationship. Individual attachment in the labor market is important as it can be seen as a route to adequate income but individuals, identified as socially excluded, are not in paid work that lead to the property. Another aspect is lack of distribution of basic service inside or outside. Because of inflammation, the cost of basic needs are increasing day by day. So without payment, this service was cut off for many people who could not afford it. The condition is worse for the family with children. But more than 12 million people lack digital skills as the modern world is mainly converting into the digital world (Lehton & Breslow, 2021). Almost every workplace is in need of a small amount of computer knowledge. As the living cost is increasing the sub product needed in education also seemed to be out of hand for the people living in property.

Effective interventions that can tackle the situations and empower children and families

Interventions that can be taken to tackle the situations like lack of jobs, educational barriers and social injustice due to poverty between the children and families in the UK requires an approach which is multifaceted. The first one is reforming the comprehensive education system. The implementation of the “holistic education reform program” is very much important. This approach not only increases the fund for children’s education of low income families but also reduces the size of the class (Lyndon, 2019). It also helps to provide important support to the students with various learning requirements. The second one is giving education in early childhood. Accessing high quality education from the very beginning of childhood can help the children to play the field. This intervention includes highly affordable and easily accessible programs for preschoolers. Another intervention is different tutoring and mentoring programs. Creating different tutoring programs including volunteers from both communities can help the students who are struggling to get proper education. The equality act, this specific legislation identifies the discrimination and increases the equal opportunities between all individuals apart from their level of living status. It involves employment and education in both areas (O’Connell et al. 2019). Also doing partnership with local businesses can help to increase the connection between the participants with different opportunities. The Childcare Act involves the improvement of childcare services in the UK. It helps the children to get easy access to the education system and to get high quality care. 

Policies and legislation that can support the children and families facing difficulties

Several policies and legislation have been put together in the UK or United Kingdom to support the families and children living in poverty. Some of the relevant laws and policies include child benefit. It implies the universal payment method which is mainly done to help the parents in low income families to raise their children. Mainly it is a program that provides financial support to the families in poverty. The other one is universal credit. It is a welfare program that also provides financial support to the families with low income. It mainly includes families with children. In a single payment it consolidates other benefits (Stewart et al. 2019). The policies which can be implemented are free school meal programs, pupil premium funding to support the education system of the children in the UK, Housing benefit etc. These policies and laws are important to address the challenges faced by the families and children due to poverty. 

Conclusion

This project shows various information about many families in poverty areas. For removing poverty, identifying the causes was a must as it was shown in the study. So, many policies and schemes are induced in society that can help the family living in poverty that will remove the core problem of poverty. Vacancy for unemployed people should increase so as the education distribution with some extra knowledge that could help the children to establish themselves in future, leaving the poverty. Laws should be strict in case of social injustice so that one with ability can obtain a good job as per one’s level. Early education with high quality education will help children to have stable feet in adulthood. This project has identified the cause and its problem and also showed multiple processes to overcome it successfully.
